KARACHI: Authorities discovered the body of a teenage domestic worker suspended from a ceiling fan in a Defence Housing Authority (DHA) residence under contentious circumstances on Sunday evening, according to police sources.
The police reported that the deceased, identified as Mariya, 16, was transferred to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal procedures.
Darakshan Station House Officer (SHO) Irfan Asif disclosed that Mariya had been employed as a domestic worker at a doctor’s residence on Khayaban-i-Bukhari for the past year.
South Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sajid Amir Sadozai stated that the homeowner alleged that the girl had taken her own life by hanging from a ceiling fan using a dupatta (scarf).
However, SSP Sadozai expressed skepticism due to the “circumstantial evidence” and affirmed that the police were conducting a thorough investigation.
He assured that legal actions would be taken based on the conclusions drawn from the autopsy.
