Next week, Strategic Dialogue between Pakistan and China scheduled

Islamabad: Next week, Pakistan and China are slated to engage in a strategic dialogue, an annual tradition aimed at delving into their bilateral relations, alongside discussing regional and international matters of mutual interest. A statement from the foreign office highlights the significance both nations attach to bolstering their ‘All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership,’ reinforcing mutual support on core issues, boosting economic and trade cooperation (including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor or CPEC), and reaffirming joint commitments to regional peace and development.

Additionally, the Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) of CPEC will convene in Beijing to evaluate progress.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to journey to Beijing in early June, marking his first official visit since reassuming office following the February 8 elections.

Pakistan views its relationship with China as pivotal, maintaining a steadfast stance despite external pressures to reassess ties. China, a consistent ally, has extended critical support, including timely loan rollovers, and backing Pakistan’s core interests at international forums as a permanent member of the UNSC.

Recent security concerns over Chinese nationals working on various projects in Pakistan have prompted heightened vigilance. The tragic March 26 attack in Besham claimed the lives of five Chinese engineers, prompting swift assurances from Pakistan regarding security measures and a commitment to prosecute those responsible. Investigations revealed the assailant was an Afghan national affiliated with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar is scheduled to visit Beijing from May 13-16 for the Strategic Dialogue, co-chairing the Fifth Pakistan-China Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue with Chinese counterparts. Discussions will encompass a broad spectrum, from economic and trade cooperation to high-level exchanges, CPEC enhancements, and future connectivity initiatives. The leaders will also address regional geopolitical dynamics and bilateral collaboration in multilateral fora.

In addition to the formal dialogue, Dar anticipates meetings with Chinese leaders, senior ministers, and corporate figures, further solidifying the enduring bond between Pakistan and China.
