“Lahore’s Heat Wave May Subside by Today’s End”

“Heat Wave Continues to Grip Lahore Despite Official Promises”

Despite assurances from the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) that today would mark the end of the current heat wave in Lahore, weather forecasters warn that the extreme temperatures may persist for several more days.

The ongoing heat wave has inflicted widespread suffering across the city, leading to numerous hospitalizations due to heat-related illnesses. Both humans and animals are feeling the brunt of the scorching temperatures, with reports of distress becoming increasingly common. Adding to the residents’ difficulties, power outages persist despite efforts by the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) to address the shortfall. Technical issues with transformers, both old and new, have resulted in widespread electricity disruptions, exacerbating the situation.

The blistering heat is not limited to Lahore alone; much of the country is grappling with its effects. Mohenjodaro recently recorded a staggering temperature of 53 degrees Celsius, the highest nationwide in the past 24 hours.

According to the Met Department, relief from the heat is unlikely in the next two days, with most plain areas expected to remain sweltering. While dusty winds and thunderstorms may offer brief respite in the afternoons, it may prove insufficient.

Heat Wave Conditions Across the Country:

  • Islamabad: Temperatures in the capital are predicted to be 3 to 5 degrees above normal, with very hot weather expected.
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Extreme heat is anticipated in this region, with daytime temperatures forecasted to be 4 to 6 degrees above normal.
  • Punjab: Much of the plains in Punjab are expected to remain under a heat wave, with temperatures projected to be 6 to 8 degrees above normal.
  • Murree and Galiyat: Dry weather is expected to persist in these areas.
  • Balochistan: Hot weather is predicted in most districts.
  • Sindh: Upper districts are expected to endure a severe heat wave with temperatures 6 to 8 degrees above normal, while the coastal belt will remain hot and humid.

Authorities advise citizens to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and take extra precautions for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children. Immediate infrastructural improvements are necessary to address the ongoing power outages caused by transformer faults and alleviate the impact of the relentless heat.
