Unhygienic, Cheap and Ghee Mill owners responsible for Increasing Outdoor Patients in Twin Cities

Tahir Mehmood Khan

How long public will have to suffer in the hands of Punjab Food Authority

Unhygienic, expensive and substandard food being supplied to customers is adding alarming number of outdoor patients due to growing number of stomach and intestinal disease. Lack of implementation of quality standards and improper processing of ghee and oils on the part of factory owners are responsible for this issue.

Deep fried chicken, potato chips items are treated with substandard ghee and oils which create acidity, nausea, vomiting, stomach ulcers, stomach disorders, diarrhea, dysentery and intestinal disorders.

Twin cities outdoor patients record show almost double Increase in number of gastro-intestinal patients due to carelessness on the part. Standard operating procedures set by the Food Authority are not followed in the trues letter and spirit.

Frying oil pans are not changed and the utensils are never emptied throughout the day making the oil unhealthy. Food items must be at least fried for five times and the oil must be removed. Food items are fried throughout the day without the complete removal of oils from pans instead fresh oil is added to already used oil which becomes more harmful for health.

Punjab Health Authority must pay a vigilant role to control this alarming situation otherwise the outdoor patient number would be tripled. Health directives issued from time to time and set food patterns and standard operating procedures must be followed by hotels and fast-food outlets as per Punjab Food Authority directives issued from time to time to save the health of citizens, he concluded.

Vegetable ghee and oil manufactures are bound to meet the national standards including proper utilization of time during ghee and oil processing, melting point of ghee and oils should be according to body temperature so that it should not clog the blood vessels, proper PH should be maintained, iodine and saponification levels must be checked during the process of neutralization, Vitamin D, stabilizers, preservatives and essences must be added at proper times so these oils would be beneficial, Food Technologist on request of anonymity explained.

Industrialists just care about their profits without caring about quality standards while the auditors and inspectors are given their due share for keeping their ears deaf and eyes closed. Legislation is available but lack of implementation is the cause of rising outdoor patients in hospitals and the one who bells the cat must bear the consequences. Exemplary punishments to all those factory owners who are involved in making the ghee and oil quality unfit for health would bring about positive results.
